Hello,
I'm asking this quesiton on behalf of a fellow employee.
Her office is considering hiring someone specificly to help with Section 508 with regard to their scientific content--providing appropriate ALT text for scientific images and such. Because this is a first as far as we've heard of, we wanted to see if any other Agencies or organizations had done something similar. Below is the draft job description they've come up with so far:
Specific duties include:
1. Writing alternative text for images in scientific and strategic
publications; this may require conferring with Agency personnel to
obtain guidance
2. Applying correct tags to Adobe Acrobat documents to make them
accessible to screen readers
Required Skills:
Previous writing experience. Examples of previous writing, preferably on
scientific subjects, will be required for review.
Desired Skills:
Experience working in a team environment to produce a product.
Familiarity with Section 508 regulations. Experience working on websites
- ideally knowledge of HTML and Adobe Acrobat, but will provide hands-on
training in these topics to the right candidate if necessary.
If anyone has thoughts or ideas on this, please let me know and I'll pass them on to my colleague.
Thanks.
Courtney Smith
