Three domains of discourse are identifed in the figure as bubbles connected by bi-directional arrows, showing interaction and mutual dependency. The three bubbles are identified as the Interaction, Application, and Computation domains. The Interaction domain contains acronyms and phrases identifying Grid candidate technologies which are heavily involved in human interaction with computers: the Molecular Interactive Collaboration Environment (MICE), the Open Portal Integration Environment (OPIE), Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 1.0 (WCAG1.0), the Access Grid, etc. The Application Domain is represented by: Cactus, Euler, the Protein Data Bank (PDB), and the Carnegie Collection. The Computation Domain is exemplified by High Performance Fortran (HPF), Open Message Passing (OMP), the Storage Resource Broker (SRB), and the Common Object Resource-Broker Architecture (CORBA).
As discussed in the main text, the purpose is to point out that successful rendering of computational service is dependent on how well coupled the programming in these three areas is.
